SC receives writ petition seeking JSP’s revocation

KATHMANDU- The Supreme Court (SC) has received a writ petition seeking the scrapping of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP).

According to SC sources, advocate Hriday Raj Mishra filed a writ petition on behalf of Raj Kumar Thapa, the then Vice-Chairman of the Rastriya Janata Party (RJP), seeking the revocation of the JSP and urging to revive the erstwhile RJP and Samajbadi Party (SP).

The petitioners have demanded the SC to treat the case as deserving priority and suspend all political activities of the JSP until the final verdict comes.

The writ petition claims that no constitutional and legal process was completed during the unification of the erstwhile RJP and SP.

The petition claims that even the mandatory provision of 33 percent women representation in the Executive Committee is not addressed in the existing JSP.

Then RJP and SP had united to form the JSP on April 22, 2020.

Lately, with the activation of the groups of previous parties and the rivalry between JSP Chairmen Mahantha Thakur and Upendra Yadav, the party is split again, though unofficially.

When the dispute reached the Election Commission (EC), the commission had tried to settle the dispute by calling both factions to office for discussion. However, the attempt to retain the party unity failed.

The commission has since formed a bench to resolve the dispute.
