NA session: members present arguments for and against HoR dissolution

In a session of the National Assembly today, the Upper House aired mixed views in regard with the May 22 dissolution of the House of Representatives.

At the same time, some expressed their views in favour of the dissolution while some were against of it.

During the special session of the meeting, some welcomed the decision of going for fresh people’s mandate while some others were of the view that election only to be held in accordance with the constitution would safeguard and promote democracy and the election would just destroy democracy if it was conducted unconstitutionally.

CPN (UML)’s Devendra Dahal said the reinstated HoR failed to perform effectively and it was necessary to go for the fresh polls.

Ramesh Jung Rayamajhi of Nepali Congress accused the government of being failed to respond to COVID-19 crisis effectively.

Accusing of more corruption in the country, he demanded transparency in the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines. On a different note, Rayamajhi questioned the government why the revised political map of the country was not featured in the textbooks published by Janak Education Materials Center. He also accused the Prime Minister of trying to rule through an ordinance by dissolving the House of Representatives.

CPN (Maoist Center)’s Narayan Kaji Shrestha requested not to end the NA session immediately and argued that it should be continued as a venue for protecting democracy and raising people’s voices in the absence of the HoR.

As he argued, the constitution did not grant the prerogative right of dissolving the HoR to the Prime Minister.
